It was in 1989, through the collaboration of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, the city of Montmelo and the Royal Automotive Club of Catalonia (RACC) that the work on the circuit of Catalunya started. In September 1991, this circuit, close to Barcelona, opened its doors to receive the first big International event some weeks later: the Formula 1 Grand-Prix of Spain.
Championship of Europe Motorcycle racing was then welcomed in 1995. Considered one of the most modern circuits with a capacity of 104 000 spectators, the circuit of Catalunya took the 2001 trophy for the best Grand-Prix awarded by IRTA.
